What you will learn

The training follows the four domains that Microsoft measures in the AZ-140 exam. The percentage shows how much weight each domain carries.

Plan and build the infrastructure

40 to 45% of the exam

The foundation of every environment: networking, storage, host pools and images.

  • Network design, with RDP Shortpath and Private Link
  • Storage for FSLogix with Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files
  • Building host pools and session hosts, including with PowerShell, Bicep and ARM templates
  • Creating and maintaining images with Azure VM Image Builder and Azure Compute Gallery

Identity and security

15 to 20% of the exam

Secure access to the workspace and well-protected session hosts.

  • Choosing an identity scenario: Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID or Entra Domain Services
  • Conditional Access, MFA, passwordless sign-in and single sign-on
  • Permissions with Azure RBAC
  • Protecting session hosts with Microsoft Defender, Trusted Launch and network security

User environment and apps

20 to 25% of the exam

What the user notices: profiles, apps and the workspace experience.

  • FSLogix profile containers and Cloud Cache
  • Clients, redirection, printing and user settings via Intune
  • Publishing apps as RemoteApp and with App Attach
  • Microsoft 365 Apps, OneDrive and Teams on multi-session hosts

Monitor and maintain

10 to 15% of the exam

An environment that runs reliably and stays affordable.

  • Monitoring with Azure Monitor and Azure Virtual Desktop Insights
  • Autoscaling and session host capacity
  • Update strategy for session hosts
  • Backup, disaster recovery and multiple regions

Good to know

For server and workplace administrators who will set up or manage Azure Virtual Desktop. In that role, you work alongside Azure administrators, Azure architects, Microsoft 365 administrators and security engineers.

Experience with Azure administration: compute, networking, identity and storage. Knowledge of virtualisation, backup and disaster recovery helps. You have already worked with tools such as the Azure portal, Azure PowerShell and Cloud Shell. New to Azure? Then start with AZ-900.

You take the AZ-140 exam online or at a test centre. To pass, you need a score of 700 or higher (on a scale of 1,000). The exam is in English; if it is not available in your own language, you can request 30 minutes of extra time. Microsoft offers a free practice assessment.

The Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty certification is valid for 12 months. You renew it free of charge with an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

The skills Microsoft measures as of 20 July 2026. Microsoft updates the exam regularly; we update the training accordingly.
